LEXINGTON, Ky. — Big Ass Fans announced an integration with Jawbone to personalize and help improve your sleep.

How it works

The Haiku with SenseME smart ceiling fan, which automates comfort with its on-board computer and environmental sensors, now connects to UP by Jawbone fitness trackers, wearable devices that make it easy to monitor and understand your sleep patterns.

Place your UP fitness tracker into sleep mode directly on the tracker or through the UP App when you go to bed, and Haiku with SenseME also enters Sleep mode. As UP tracks the quality and duration of your sleep, Haiku with SenseME is monitoring the room around you, adjusting speed automatically for consistent, all-night comfort. Haiku slows down as the temperature drops overnight, so you’ll never again wake up freezing at 4 a.m. And just as Haiku with SenseME helps to improve your sleep, it can also offer a better wake-up by gently easing you into morning with a gradual increase of fan speed and light level.

The technology will be available to the public in February.

Why it matters

According to the Institute of Medicine, an estimated 70 million Americans struggle with chronic sleep problems. And the conditions around your bed are just as crucial to a good night’s sleep as your mattress, sheets and pillow; research shows thermal comfort is strongly linked to how well we sleep.

“Ceiling fans are installed in bedrooms more often than any other room of the house, and they have the ability to dramatically improve one’s sleep if used intelligently,” said Alex Reed, director of consumer products for Big Ass Fans. “Connecting Haiku with SenseME to our individual customers via UP by Jawbone’s fitness trackers is an important first step in customizing their sleep environments.”

Through in-depth sleep tracking data and automated thermal comfort, Big Ass Fans and Jawbone are delivering the solution for a better night’s sleep. Preferences are easy to set using the SenseME app, available on both iOS and Android devices. Haiku with SenseME is compatible with UP3, UP24 and UP MOVE bands.

“With over 150 million nights of sleep logged by the UP community – amounting to the world’s largest ever sleep study – we have significant insight into what makes for a good night’s sleep,” said Travis Bogard, vice president of product management and strategy for Jawbone. “Our intelligent Smart Coach system gives people personalized guidance to help them sleep better, and through this integration we can extend the UP system’s functionality to control the temperature around you, which research has
shown to be a key factor in the quality of your sleep.”
