[International CES 2015] EnOcean to demonstrate self-powering IoT solutions
By EnOcean GmbH 2014-12-11
EnOcean has announced that battery-free, self-powering connected home solutions capable of sub 1 GHz and 2.4 GHz radio communications will be showcased at the International CES 2015.
Devices that operate on such solutions power themselves via the collection of free energy from the environment, harvesting electricity from such sources as linear motion, pressure, light, or differences in temperature. In application, this would for example enable a wireless light switch to communicate with lighting on a radio signal powered by the kinetic force utilized in depressing the switch. As these technologies generate sufficient electricity for sensors to conduct measurements and submit radio communications, they are expected to significantly reduce the need for batteries and device servicing or maintenance.
With use of sub 1 GHz ISM radio communications (ISO/IEC 14543-3-10), EnOcean wireless sensor modules have already seen incorporation in a number of automation ecosystems, providing minimal-interference transmissions of sufficient robustness to penetrate walls and reach ranges of up to 100 feet within buildings. As such, they are suited for utilization within smart home networks and related applications. Battery-free kinetic powering for 2.4 GHz radio communications (IEEE 802.15.4) is also available – well-suited for communications with domestic LED lighting systems.
The EnOcean booth at the International CES 2015 will be situated at the Sands Expo, “The Heart of the Smart Home,” in booth 74876.
