Broadcom announces addition of Near Field Communications to its WICED IoT Platform
By Broadcom 2014-12-08
As of December 4th, 2015, communications provider Broadcom announced integration of Near Field Communications (NFC) within its Wired Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) software development kit (SDK).
The WICED Internet of Things platform, which previously integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Smart communications capabilities, has with its new NFC integration become capable of seamless tap-to-connect device interoperation, permitting the instant launching of apps on a mobile phone by physically tapping the phone to a piece of hardware.
Broadcom expects the tap-to-control user experience for NFC-enabled products to be compelling for incorporation in smart home and medical applications, where an end-user interacts with a variety of devices with limited or no graphical display. By tapping their smartphone to a smart thermostat, for example, an end-user is instantly recognized, and the house is automatically set to their preferred temperature.
